Few sights evoke the Christmas spirit in Singapore as much as the iconic lights in Orchard Road, drawing locals and tourists from all over the world since 1984. President Tony Tan, Guest-of-Honour of the Community Chest Christmas on A Great Street Light-up Ceremony, marked the occasion on 12 November at Ngee Ann City Civic Plaza, with Mr Tan Chuan-Jin, Minister for Social and Family Development.
In celebrating abilities, Community Chest invited Paralympians Yip Pin Xiu and Theresa Goh, who made Singapore proud with their achievements at the recent Rio 2016 Paralympic Games. Both swimmers were former clients of AWWA TEACH Me Services (now known as AWWA Community Integration Service), a programme supported by Community Chest.
Some AWWA School students, aged 12 to 18, staged a performance called ‘A Magical Party’, with volunteer music students from Aureus Academy during the Light-Up Ceremony. The music school has coached the AWWA School students in movements and singing, as well as playing simple musical instruments.
Among the AWWA performers is 16-year-old Joshua Ng, who is singing in a lead role. “I am happy to be given this opportunity to perform. I found the performance difficult to learn at first as it was exhausting to follow the steps. I used to have stage fright but I conquered it as my friend encouraged me,” said Joshua.
Thank you to every who joined us in celebrating abilities that night, including our main sponsor, Hitachi Group of Companies and corporate partners PropNex Realty, NTUC FairPrice Foundation, StarHub Ltd and Evangel Family Church.
