Help Her To Fulfil Her Hopes

Being visually impaired did not stop 10-year-old Cheyenne Phua from going to school and imagining about her future.

“I like to go to school because I have many friends there. My favourite subject is Science and I like to learn about nature,” she said. “One day, I would like to open a shop that sells flowers and toys.”

Cheyenne was born with bilateral opaque corneas with iridocorneal adhesions. She has blurred vision in the left eye and is able to move around without bumping into objects but cannot see numbers and letters clearly. This limited her learning and even at the age of 6, she was unable to read or write.

The turning point came when she joined Lighthouse School 4 years ago. She learnt Braille and did well in her subjects. She is in primary 3 this year and hopes to go to a mainstream secondary school after PSLE. She loves music and is learning to play the piano.

Her father, Mr Henry Phua, was encouraged by the amount of confidence that she has gained since she started going to Lighthouse School. He said, “She is now a cheerful and confident girl, and enjoys talking and interacting with others.”
