Madam Wong Wah Quai, 90, has always dreamt of going on a cruise. She lives alone at Holland Close area and is befriended by Lions Befrienders, supported by Community Chest. From 23 to 27 May, she and her befriender, Mr. Aw Teck Chin, 89, joined 38 others to go an all-paid cruise to Phuket, thanks to the sponsor, Royal Caribbean Cruises (Asia) Pte Ltd.
Through Community Chest, Royal Caribbean invited 23 lonely seniors and 15 befrienders to a 4-night cruise to Port Klang and Phuket on their ship – Legend of the Seas. All 38 of them were given VIP treatment throughout the trip.
Additionally, special programmes were arranged by the crew to keep them entertained. These included a bingo game that came with prizes, private movie screening, karaoke session, shore excursions in Port Klang and Phuket, on top of the daily cruise programmes and activities. Special care was also given to the group's needs such as language assistance in the form of Chinese menus and Chinese daily programme sheets.
Madam Wong said the love showered on her by the crew throughout the trip made it very memorable for her. She was also thankful that there are still caring people in society who have not forgotten about her and the 22 other underprivileged seniors.
