Nurul Suhailah is 11 years old. Wheelchair bound, she has been diagnosed with Spastic Diplegia and requires regular physiotherapy. Nurul works on her walking skills with a mobility aid called a rollator and has been making steady progress. She joined the Spastic Children Association of Singapore School (SCAS) in January 1999.
Nurul has shown remarkable improvement in her studies and is currently learning at the Primary 2 level. She has a positive disposition and a passion for learning.
Today, Nurul's rapid progress and potential have won her entry into a mainstream primary school.
Nurul receives physiotherapy once a week to maintain muscle and joint integrity, improving her sitting balance, sit-to-stand ability, and encourage her to walk with the aid of forearm walkers. She also receives occupational therapy once a week.
Inspired and driven by her experiences during her stay in hospital, Nurul dreams of becoming a doctor one day,." I want to help others like myself to recover from injuries and illness. I know I have to work very hard to achieve my goal," she says.
For now, she is actively involved in music and drama at school, has a wonderful singing voice, and is picking up computer skills very quickly. Last year, Nurul co-hosted the school's Teacher's Day celebration.
Nurul's teacher, Gabriel Lim says: "Nurul is an excellent candidate to represent the needs of the disabled students in Special Education schools, particularly with her high, intrinsic motivation and her ability to set goals she can strive for. Careful guidance in developing her social skills will help her mature into a good role model and make a positive contribution to society."
